Back To School 2nd Grade Read Alouds

I asked my amazing facebook fans to list what chapter books they will read to their class to start out the school year.  Overwhelmingly the 2nd grade teachers gave the most recommendations so today's blog post will feature some great 2nd grade read alouds.  Some are books that I have never heard of before.

Back when I taught 2nd grade I started each year reading the book "The Twits"  by Roald Dahl.  This book is so funny and it is great to use to teach Visualization skills especially when they are describing the main characters!  Read those parts without showing the pictures and have your children draw a sketch!

Michael suggested one of my favorite series of books "The Magic Tree House" by Mary Pope Osbourne.  These books are great because they also have a nonfiction book to go with the fiction book!

Linda suggested "The Dragon Slayer Academy" series of books by  Kate McMullan.  She said they are kind of like the Harry Potter books for younger students.  Linda said they are very age appropriate, clever, and humorous!

Next, Chris suggested "Snot Stew" by Bill Wallace.  This is a book about 2 kittens who were adopted by two children and must learn human ways!  Sounds hilarious!

Last, but not least Monica suggested "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown. A story of a normal boy who becomes flat and goes on many fun adventures!  She also suggested the classic "Charlotte's Web."

I hope these books will help you out as you look to find entertaining Chapter books to read to your students.  What is the first chapter book that you will read to your 2nd graders this year?

As always thanks for hoppin' by Hopkins' Hoppin' Happenings.  Keep on smiling!
