Don't Laugh At Me

Back in middle school I was the one who was always picked on for a variety of ridiculous reasons.  A few years later this song "Don't Laugh At Me" by Mark Wills came on the radio and touch my heart in a big way.  Mark Wills is one of my favorite singers of all time because of it.  I have met him and seen him in concert a few times.  Now as a teacher, I have it a zero tolerance rule for bullying and teasing.  No child or anyone for that matter deserves to bullied, laughed at, and picked on.

For those that want to view the video copy and paste the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVjbo8dW9c8&ob=av2n

One of the books I mentioned in her e-book was "Don't Laugh At Me" that the songwriters turned into a book.  It is written by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin and illustrated by Glin Dibley.  The pictures are incredible.  I love reading this book to the students and having a great discussion!  http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Laugh-Reading-Rainbow-Book/dp/1582460582/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325355908&sr=8-1

Anyone else read the book or heard the song?  Anyone have any great ideas on how to use the book or song in a classroom or with your own children at home?  Please share below in the comments!

Brian :-)
P.S. I just figured out how to make the links.  whohohooooooooooo!  I am proud of myself. haha

  2. Brian, I love the song and the book. Thank you for what you are doing to teach kids about bullying. I agree there should be ZERO tolerance.

  4. Our school counselor did the book in a lesson last year... she read the book and then the kids decorated paper T-shirts with messages they chose. She played the song while they worked on the shirts and I cried. :-) Then she hung the T-shirts on a string "clothesline" outside the library. It turned out so cute!

  5. Rachel, that is a very cool idea! I bet the children did an amazing job on the t-shirts! I'm going to have to steal that idea. :-)

  6. Wonderful post. It hurts my heart to think that anyone in my class might be afraid of coming to school because of bullying. I actually wrote a post about it myself a week ago, you might want to take a look. It is just how I teach students about bullying in my class.

Thank you for spreading the word and keeping anti-bullying at the top of people's minds.

  7. Stephanie, thanks so much. I know what you mean that hurts me as well. Last year toward the end of the year it was brought to my attention by a parent, but after investigating the child wasn't really being bullied. He'd say someone hit him when their hand accidentally brushed them in line. I then found out there were things going on at home. So you never know, but I sure checked it out immediately!
I'm headed over to your blog now to read that lesson!
