We have so many obese children in this world. A large part of the problem is all the unhealthy eating and so much sitting around watching tv and playing video games. While I played video games as a child, I also loved going outside and playing kick ball, basketball, hide and seek and other fun games with the neighborhood children. Sadly this doesn't go on very often.
Debbie Clement has an amazing blog post over at her blog: http://prekandksharing.blogspot.com/2012/01/eating-healthy-free-mp3-happy-new-year.html
It is about healthy eating! Leave a comment on Debbie's blog post at the link above and she'll send you a very catchy healthy eating song that your children will really enjoy. I know Kindergarten-2nd grade would absolutely love the song and probably some of the other children as well.
I think it would be fun to have the children keep track of what fruits and vegetables they eat every month by keeping a calendar at home. Parents could help the younger ones and that might help them visually see that they need to eat more fruits and vegetables!
Another fun idea for keeping children active in the classroom is to have them do what I call Letter Aerobics. This would work for all grade levels! Give them a word in their spelling list or a high frequency word and as they chant how to spell the word they stand on tip toes and touch the sky if the letter goes to the top line, touch hips if it goes to the mid line, and toes if it goes below the bottom line.
Feel free to share your ideas on how to keep children active and healthy in the comments below!
