Spelling Aerobics

How many of you loving going to inservices and learning new things?  I have always enjoyed it.  One of the best inservices I went to was about 7 years ago.  It was a reading inservice that mostly taught me about Guided Reading.  One week, though was spent on spelling.

I spoke on an earlier post about eating healthy and movement to help fight childhood obesity.  I thought I would share a fun spelling idea that I learned from the reading inservice called "Spelling Aerobics."

Write your spelling words on index cards.  I then put them up one at a time on the board or the document camera (same as an elmo).  Children then chant the letters while they try to reach for the stars for letters that go to the top line, touch the middle for letters that touch the mid-line, or touch their toes for letters that go below the bottom line.  Children get a good workout and enjoy learning how to spell words at the same time!

This as worked really well in both Kindergarten and 2nd grade.  I believe it would work well in all grade levels in elementary school! I may give it a whirl in my 5th grade class if we can fit it in that I started with on April 23rd!

Give it a try and let me know how your students enjoy this!

Be sure to stop by Rachel's Minds In Bloom page to learn other ways to get your students up and moving!
