Making Idioms Fun!

How can you make idioms fun? Well on Friday, I mentioned I subbed in a 3rd grade class and read the book "Even More Parts," which has tons of idioms in it. We then discussed what each one really meant along with many other examples not found in the book.

Next, the teacher left me directions to have children fold a paper in hamburger style. In the middle of the paper they wrote an idiom of their choice. On the top they drew a picture of what the idiom sounded like and on the bottom they drew a picture of what the idiom really meant. I am the world's worst drawer these 3rd graders even the ones who insisted they couldn't draw do it better than me so I made a sample using microsoft clip art. I know I'm so bad! Check it out below!

I don't know why the frame didn't show around it, but anyway you get the idea!  Now here are a couple of book ideas for teaching idioms.

There's also of course "Parts" and "More Parts" by Tedd Arnold.

How do you teach idioms in the classroom.  Let me know in the comments below and include your grade level.

Thanks for hoppin' by Hopkins' Hoppin' Happenings.  Keep on smiling! :-)
