Math Errors - WBT

Last Thursday, I watched a wonderful webcast video on Superspeed Math and learned many wonderful ideas.  You can click "here" to go check out for yourself.  Scroll down halfway down the page and you should be able to find it.



Today, I wanted to discuss something specific from the video.  Many children dislike math and find it to be difficult.  How can we make it better for our students?  What we really need to focus on is stopping all of the math errors.  Children make math errors according to Whole Brain Teaching due to 4 things:

  • Too few repetitions - We don't give the children enough practice!
  • Errors are corrected late - We wait a day, week, or longer to give children feedback on their assignment.  It makes it tough for them to learn from their mistakes because of this.  They should receive immediate feedback!
  • No fun - Much of the math work we assign is just not fun.  We need to play more games and make math more interesting for our students.
  • Non-motivating rewards - We need to focus more on instrinsic rewards such as rewarding children for making improvements in Math.  You can do that by using a super improvement wall, which you can also check out in a video on Whole Brain Teaching.
Try these tips and see if your students succeed in math and enjoy it much more than they used to like it!  In the comments share how often you give students feedback on their math work and how often?  How do you make math fun?  How are your students motivated to learn math?

  1. I give feedback instantly! I never grade work at home, I have the kids bring me their work and help them fix their mistakes before they ever leave school. I have the advantage of having a tiny special ed class of 5 kids, so I can always see what they understand or don't understand.

    I make things fun by using non-math objects to do math activities. We don't count blocks, we count foam bugs, super star erasers, and make patterns out of cereal.

    1. I guess that makes it a bit easier with only 5 kiddos, but I am so glad you are able to give them instant feedback and help them right away so they learn from their mistakes. I bet they make huge learning gains due to it! Love the ways you make Math fun, especially that you use food! Can I be in your class? hehe
