Common Core Essential Questions

I have had my 2nd grade Common Core Essential Questions Task Cards out for many months and then made my 1st Grade Language Arts Essential Question Task Cards awhile later.  I am pleased to announce that I finally got around to doing the 1st Grade Math Common Core Essential Questions Task Cards.  Next up Kindergarten!  If you'd like to check out my Essential Questions click on the pictures.

Cell Phone/Smart Phone Phonics and Multiplication Fun!

I thought I would fill my readers in who may not be following my store or facebook about my brand new set of products!  I am using the adorable Glitter Cell Phones from Glitter Meets Glue Designs.

The first product is geared toward K-2 and is called Cell Phone CVC and CVCe Center Activities.  Students text the CVC or CVCe word by looking up the letters and seeing what number matches the letter.  I also included recording sheets if you want your students to do a word sort and for ABC order!  Directions, common core standards, and answer keys are included.  It is also in black and white too!  Lots of fun!  Click the picture to check them out!

Subtraction Regroup With Food

What kiddo doesn't like eating food and learning at the same time?  When I went shopping at Wal-Mart I found these adorable Penguin crackers.  I haven't figured out yet what to use them for.  Maybe for counting for Kindergarten or patterning.  Let me know in the comments what ideas you have!

I also have a fun idea to teach subtraction regrouping (could be used for addition as well) that I plan to use when I tutor tomorrow afternoon.  Use Cheerios for the ones and pretzels for the tens!

First the child makes the number. 

If they need to borrow like in this problem let them eat a pretzel and trade it in for 10 Cheerios.

Check the one's place to see how many to eat.  In this case it's 7 Cheerios.  Yum!

Now check the ten's lace to see how many pretzels to eat.  In this case it's 2 pretzels.  Then you come up with the difference!

What kiddo wouldn't like that fun Common Core activity?  I bet they would learn how to regroup with subtraction so much quicker this way because it's concrete!  Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.  The football cards will be available soon in my shop if you are interested!

Winter Wonderland Fun!

Search and Find Math Facts - Highlighting Fun!

Happy Veteran's Day!  Thank you to any of you who have fought for our country.  God bless you!

Often times Math is one of those subjects that children just don't care for, especially the girls.  Why not make Math fun?  I am a huge believer in using manipulatives and food to help children enjoy Math.  Let's face it, worksheets are usually boring and not engaging for students.

I decided to try to come up with an idea to turn a boring worksheet into something that might be engaging and fun!  In this set of Math worksheets the children a highlighter or a crayon to highlight the Math facts.  You could laminate it and they could highlight it with a thin dry erase marker or circle them.  For example for 5's facts they would highlight all math problems that equal 5.  I have included multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.  I went to 12's facts in this.  1's, 2's, and 3's are combined and use 3 different colored highlighters due to there being less facts.  Leave me a comment if 1st and 2nd grade teachers would be interested in ones with just addition and subtraction.

Second Grade Common Core

2nd Grade teachers I came across a really awesome Second Grade Common Core Workbook the other day that I wanted to share with all of you!  It has over 575 worksheets, activity centers, and posters that correlate with the 2nd grade Common Core Standards.  The posters are very colorful and the worksheets and centers are engaging!  This workbook covers all of the Language Arts and Math Common Core Standards!  I believe this will make planning much easier for you second grade teachers.

Turkey Craft and More Thanksgiving Business

I have been very hard at work on my first ever craft!  This is an adorable turkey.  Children read the color words on the feathers and color them before assembling the turkey.  I have included both a Pilgrim and Native American (Indian) turkey.  There are also blank templates of the feathers in case you want your students to be creative.  I also included a color by color code coloring picture and a regular coloring sheet as bonuses.  This is priced at just $1.50!  Wow!  Click the picture to go get it!

Factor Football

When I subbed in 3rd and 4th grade for a month, I really enjoyed teaching the 4th graders factors and multiples.  This center game, 2 worksheets, and task cards is one of my favorite products that I've made.  I think the clip art is just so cute!  There are football players, cheerleaders, footballs, and megaphones.  If you like the clip art, but you teach 2nd grade be sure to check out my Mental Math football and cheerleading games.  If you'd like me to make a different product with the clip art let me know I really do take suggestions!!!

Kindergarten Math Centers

3. Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. (My product only focuses on sorting not counting)

 I am surprised that patterns are not in the Common Core for Kindergarten anyway else notice this?  I didn't see it listed under first grade or second grade either.  I wonder why this is?  Anyway, I know many of you teach it so I do have a center with worksheet on patterns in this packet.

Common Core Phonics and Sight Word Fun!

I am a big fan of using phonics in the classroom.  I believe it is important to use in all grade levels in Elementary School and even if you have strugglers in middle and high school.  Common Core Standards include:

K.RFS.3, 1.RFS.3, 2.RFS.3, 3.RFS.3, 4.RFS.3, 5.RFS.3

Why not make phonics, sight words, and spelling fun for your students?

Here are ten activities that I have done with previous classes I have taught in centers, small group, or seat work:

White Boards - Kids love to use white boards to write their words.  Either give them their list of words or call them out one at a time during small groups and let them practice writing them.  It's a good quick assessment for you this way.

Elkonin Boxes - I sometimes draw a rectangle and divide it up into squares and the students push a magnetic counter into each square as they say the sounds of the word.  Then I give them a dry erase marker and they write the word into the boxes.

Shaving Cream - Children LOVE shaving cream!  I didn't have time to use it with the 5th graders, but toward the end of my short term with them they were asking me about using shaving cream.  Spray some on their desk and let them practice writing their spelling words.  It also cleans the desk, which keeps those custodians so happy!

Sand Art - Check out my previous post on sand art.  Children love making letters using colored sand.

Magnetic Letters - Let children use magnetic letters to make words.

Letter Tiles - Use letter tiles to make words.  You can use the ones in Scrabble kits or check out Lakeshore.

Chalk - If you still have the old chalkboards in your classroom let the children use chalk to make words on the chalk board.

Stencils - Write the words using stencils,

Spelling City - Type in the words on SpellingCity.com and let your students have fun playing games and taking quizes!

Word Sorting - Give your students a list of words and have them sort them using a T chart or 3 way chart by the different spelling patterns.  I always listed the children's spelling words on the board and they would sort the words into a composition notebook each week.  If they forgot a previous week how to spell a word I would remind them to check their composition notebook.
