Tutoring Tuesdays - March 5th, 2019

Happy Tuesday! I didn't tutor a couple of weeks ago due to the child having cheerleading clinic at her school. So I was back to tutoring last Wednesday. Wait until you see what she was learning in the 3rd grade!

When I got there she first showed me what she was just taught and that was long division dividing 4 digits by 2 digits. Example 6045\20. I can't type the long division on here, but you get the picture. That's a 5th grade skill. 

Well, I worked with her on a 6th grade skill. She was learning the mean of 3 digit and 5 digit numbers in school. They simply call it averaging, but it is the same thing. It is amazing to me how much advanced they are in private school than in public school. She doesn't do the Common Core craziness so I think it makes it easier for her. We worked on my Finding the Mean Task Cards. In the example, you see I wrote average on each card. The same set of cards with the word mean are also included! She miss added on a couple, but her long division was fantastic!

Next we worked on equivalent fractions using my Clip It Equivalent Fractions. She struggled some on that and part of the reason is that she was never taught how to reduce fractions so I plan to keep working with her on that. There are 24 task card, a recording sheet, and answer key.

Multiplying 9's

I have come across several neat ideas for Multiplying 9's that I have used in tutoring that I thought I would pass along to all of my wonderful blogging friends.

Picture above is using Digital Paper from Ashley Hughes and Clip Art from Teachers ClipArt.  Thanks ladies!

The first one is one that I used to use as a child.  When multiplying anything times 9, the sums always equal 9.  Example: 9 x 4 = 36, 3 + 6 = 9.  9 X 8 = 72, 7 + 2 = 9.

The next trick the child actually most came up with his on his and my light bulb went off and figured it out.  If multiplying by 9's think multiplying by 10's and then count back the other factor.  Example: 9 X 6, think 10 X 6 = 60 subtract 6 and you get 54 so 9 X 6 = 54.

The 3rd trick I found online and uses your hands.  This to me is the simplest easiest way to learn the 9's facts especially if you are visual person.  I'll let this little YouTube Video show you how it is done!  This one is even put to a song!

Whole Brain Teaching Book Club

Has anyone heard of Whole Brain Teaching?  I absolutely love it and it is something I would love to try if I get my dream job, unless of course the school is against the idea.  It is so engaging, that I believe it will work with the most difficult children and they will be having fun while learning.  It cuts down on a lot of pointless worksheets.  There is a fun attention getter, gestures, etc.  I could go on and on.

Finding Kind - Girls Bullying Girls

IndieFlix gave me the chance to review the movie Finding Kind for free 3 month subscription for myself and 10, 2 month subscriptions to giveaway!  I was not paid any money. In this endearing documentary, a pair of best friends (who happen to be queen-bee pretty girls, but no matter) travel the country speaking with middle and high school girls about their pain and the pain they’ve caused others. It’s a sweet, earnest addition to the current anti-bullying movement. A few confessional scenes—little girls in braces pouring their broken hearts into the camera—will stick with you. LINDY WEST (the Stranger).

I believe Finding Kind is perfect for 5th grade girls and up, especially middle and high schoolers.  The movie will help girl bullies see how bullying feels and perhaps will help them think twice before bullying other girls.  Bullying is a sad thing happening around the world.  If we can stop it now before these children are adults, we'll have a much better world to live in.  At the end of the movie, I love the quote "We might not all be beautiful, smart, or have talent, but we can all be kind."

Positive Fridays - Week of April 29th, 2013

Happy Friday everyone!  2 1/2 weeks of school left here in Brevard County.

Last Friday, I called in to sub in 6th grade at one of my favorite schools for 4 1/2 hours.

• I was thanked for coming in at last minutes notice by the secretary who said she printed out the list of who was available and saw my name and called me first!  Now that means a lot to me that I am liked that much to be the first one to call.
• The children worked on a reading comprehension page and a fun word search.
• Many of the children had kind things to say to me, which doesn't always happen in 6th grade.  I was told I was a cool sub by one student, others said I was their favorite sub.  It feels extra special to hear those sweet things out of 6th graders!

Monday, I worked a half day in 2nd grade for a class that I have done a couple of half days with at another favorite school of mine.

• The children were super excited to see me when I walked in the door.  So many of them cheered and said my name with smiles on their faces.  
• The teacher was also happy she had me as she knew they would be taught and helped!
• The children had activity, lunch, and recess during the half day so I didn't have a lot of time with them. They did learn about goods and services in Social Studies.  Listened to a story on the computer while they followed along in their books about inventors and worked on some spelling work.
• I saw one of my favorite 3rd graders, who yelled my name and hopped up and down!  Now that's excitement I like to see!

Tuesday through Thursday (actually also Friday and Monday, which I'll blog about next week) I subbed for my best friend's 2nd grade class at another of my favorite schools.  Sadly this was due to her mom was rushed to the hospital up north and in critical condition.  I'm so sad to report she did pass away.  I know that's not a positive on a Positive Friday post, but it's the reason I got to sub for them.

• The children were so excited to see me on Tuesday, calling my name out and many came over to give me hugs.  
• All week they had nice things to say to me and even told me Thursday they will miss me when I'm gone.  
• Several other children each day saw me and called out to me, including children I've never subbed for that have just seen me around the school. 
• I was pretty much left to do what I wanted with the students and told to just continue in the books and really work hard on writing.  I am thrilled that this group of children (despite being the inclusion class, low academics) nearly every child wrote me 5 paragraphs about their favorite summer activities!  Some were children who generally write a couple of sentences.  They told me you made this so easy for us!  I loved seeing the light bulb pop on like that!
• They also had fun with an art presentation, read some stories (including one with my last name on it), worked on counting money, subtracting with regrouping, and phonics sounds ar, are, and air.  
• They have been mostly quiet during work time and one parent who was eating lunch outside saw my group walk by and told me I had the quietest group who walked by!  I like to hear that!  They were also very respectful toward me.

Monster Division Bump

Wow, it's been awhile since I last blogged.  I thought I would share my latest freebie that many of you may have missed unless you are following my TPT store and/or FB page!  This one is for older students.  It's Monster Division Bump!

Bump is a game where you answer the math fact (this time it is Division) and cover that space with a colored counter.  If someone gets the same answer they can bump you off unless you got the same answer again before being bumped off.  Then your space is safe!  The first player to use all 10 counters wins.  If your students have never played bump before they are in for a treat and there aren't very many Division bump games out there.  Mine is FREE and uses cards that your students will turn over to solve.

I also added a blank set of cards in case you want to write with a marker or pen different problems.

Positive Fridays - Week of February 11th, 2013

It's Friday!  I hope each one of you had a special Valentine's Day with your class or your own children.  I unfortunately didn't get to sub and I don't have a special gal at the moment so my day was kind of blah.  Last year it was probably my best ever as I had such an amazing time with a special group of 3rd/4th graders.  They were extra sweet and we had an amazing party. 

 

Well on to the positives for the week!  My blog has now hit 250,000 views.  I have also sold 1,000 teaching products.  I appreciate all of the support.  Each and everyone of you mean the world to me!

Last Friday, I subbed in Kindergarten with a wonderful group of students!

• The secretary greeted me and thanked me for me coming in to sub!  I got my key and headed off to my room.
• Early in the day a teacher came in to work with a student and was a super help!
• The children had fun with calendar, learning about bears, playing alphabet bingo, and matching numbers to domino dots!
• They asked if I would eat with them because Friday is Lunch Bunch day they said.  Two of them didn't join us they told me they hadn't earned it.  I loved how honest those two children were as I would not have none.  They were good for me.
• The children were respectful, hard working, and cooperative!

Monday, I worked a half day in Computer lab.

• I was welcomed when I came in by the secretary and I got my key!
• I had 6th, 5th, and 4th grade.  The children worked on a typing program.  A few wanted to do a different program, but they listened and stayed on the correct program.
• The children were respectful, cooperative, and quiet.

Unfortunately, that is all I worked this week after having such a busy last few weeks.  I wish I was working daily whether that be subbing or better yet a teaching position.  Maybe in time I will get that wish.  I did get to start tutoring with a wonderful 2nd grade with Hidden Potentials.  I am working with him in Math, currently addition regrouping and also worked on some skip counting and mixed review.  I look forward to working with him each Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

I also get to work today in Kindergarten and I look forward to blogging about the positives next week.

Positive Fridays - Week of Jan. 28th, 2013

Another week has come and gone.  It's already February and tomorrow will be Groundhog's Day!  Now onto the positives!

Last Friday, I finished my week in Skills activity class.

• It was nice that it was a little warmer for my crosswalk duty in the morning and after school.  To start the day off before I went to work, I called my friend as I usually do to make sure she was awake to go to work and she told me one of her students (who is at another school actually) thinks I now have a new job of Crosswalk duty.  haha  
• As always, I was greeted, signed in, and got my key to the room.
• I had no 5th and 6th grade so part of planning I went to get paper towels and wet them so I could clean off the big dry erase board.  It was way dirty before I even came last week so I made it look nice. :-)
• On my way back from getting the paper towels I saw the wonderful third graders who love me so much.  They instantly yelled my name and the same sweet girl came running over to give me a hug.  Then 4 others gave me a group hug.  Their teacher smiled and said how sweet they were.  Now she sees how much they want me to sub for them!
• The kids had fun learning Math, watching a video, and playing 4 corners!

Monday, I worked in 5th grade at another school I sub at frequently.  They also have 5, 6th graders.  I have previously subbed for this class before.  They switch classes so I had two groups.

• I am always welcomed as well at this school and I got my key to the room.
• The children worked on some vocabulary work and grammar.  Then they got to watch most of The Best of School House Rock.
• I had a wonderful assistant (speech interpreter) in the 2nd class.  She is always excited to see me and always welcomes me!
• I ran into some of the wonderful Kindergarten kids and got some sweet hugs!  They are always so excited to see me!

 Tuesday, I didn't get to work so instead I had my fingerprint and background check done for Hidden Potentials.  I am so excited to get to start tutoring for them!  I'm just waiting on a phone call from a parent to set up times now!

Wednesday, I was at the same school as Monday, but this time in 2nd grade, the grade I taught for 5 years.

• After getting my key and being greeted, I went to my room.  The teacher next door was kind enough to tell me to let her know if I need anything.
• This teacher was so awesome she left no worksheets.  Instead the kids got to do fun hands-on learning and reading all day.  It was a shorter day as the kids got dismissed an hour early.
• They did some creative writing in their journals on what cereal they would be and why.  Then shared it with the class.
• The children also had fun with the Daily 5 in reading while I took 3 different groups.  I read and they drew what they heard (visualization). They also enjoyed using investigating different soil samples and filling out information for it in their science journals.  For Math, they went on a shape hunt to find things with 2 parallel lines, 4 vertices, etc.  That went in their Math journals and then shared it.  
• During calendar, one boy insisted he was giving me a massage as he always does for his teacher.  He did a nice job!
• They were hard working and respectful students.
• I also ran into Kindergarten in the cafeteria.  They were so excited.  Several stood up and put their arms out because they just had to have their Mr. Hop hugs!

Thursday, back at the same school again, but this time in 3rd grade.  I've subbed in a lot of 3rd grade classes this year and this one was one of the best!

• After getting my key and being greeted, 3 of the 4 3rd grade teachers made their way through my room and greeted me!  The other teacher was in another wing, but I saw her at recess.
• The children came in and had their planners stamped and got started reading or illustrating their stories right away!
• They also worked on color by number multiplication for 8's facts,  I read them a story about different kinds of moods people have (they did an awesome job of participating when I asked for examples of why they may feel that way), and worked on some vocabulary work.  
• They were well behaved, cooperative, and hard working for me.
• These children got complimented in computers for doing the best of any 3rd grade class on what they were doing in there so far!  I was so impressed to hear such good news!
• I also saw those amazing Kindergarten kids again in the cafeteria and got my hugs.  I ran into a 1st grader and her parent at dismissal who were both excited to see me!
• At the end before car riders were dismissed a boy came up to me and said I really like you, you are the best sub!
• Then another 3rd grader from next door saw me and told me she hopes they have me again.  They had a different sub the day before.  So sweet!

I picked up work for today at another school in 3rd grade.  I'll be back for the positives next week!

Positive Fridays - Week of January 21st, 2013

TGIF Happy Friday everyone!!!  I hope each of you had a super outstanding week and will leave your own positives in the comments.  It sure will make me smile!

Last Friday, I subbed for my favorite Kindergarten class.  These children are always so sweet and kind.  They know how to make this guy smile!

• The office staff greeted me as they always do and I got my key from the secretary so I keep those doors locked!
• I had a great help next door as the two teachers keep their rooms open.  That teacher is always very appreciative of my help and calls me the best sub in the school.  She knows how to make me smile!
• One of the students came in and told me how much she likes me and gave me a hug.  Later she told me she missed me and hopes that I will always be their sub because I'm the best sub and so nice!  What a bucket filler.
• As always this group was well behaved, respectful, cooperative, and kind.
• I also had an assistant most of the day as her class went to the zoo and they had so much help she decided to stay and came to help one student who had an amazing day.
• I told the parent at car loop what a super day that student had!

Tuesday through Thursday I am grouping together this week because I was in Skills activity class, which was all Math this week. I had every grade Kindergarten through 6th grade.  I am there today too and will blog about that next week.

• The office staff is always very kind to me and I also get a key to keep the door locked!  The pencil sharpener isn't working in the classroom so I've been sharpening pencils in the lounge and the awesome bookkeepers kids me about that.  We'll see you tomorrow sharpening them pencils.  I love her, she's amazing!
• The custodians are always super appreciative of how I keep the room clean.  One day they said he deserves a lollypop!  Somebody get him one.  There's several of them and they all get so excited when they see me.
• I did crosswalk duty all week so I was outside doing that with some of the activity teachers and the computer tech.  They were so kind to me all week and one even told me you need to get out of here now you work so hard!  So nice that they recognize how hard I work!
• The majority of the students were so kind, cooperative, and many of them super quiet.  Some I had taught their class before and some of those were extra excited I was there.
• 1st and 3rd grade made me some sweet pictures when they finished their work and told me the pictures were for me.
• One student who is in 3rd grade went the extra mile to make me smile on Thursday.  I'll share that story before I end my positives for this week.  Her class is first on Thursday and she comes walking over to me Hi Mr. Hopkins I'm so happy you are subbing for us and gives me a hug.  She picks a seat near the teacher desk and says I'm sitting here to be near Mr. Hopkins.  (I don't sit at the desk, I walk the room to help and keep kids on task, but it's the thought that counts!).  She told me how she likes me and wants me to always be their sub when their teacher is out and that she misses me and loves my jolly ranchers.  I told her how I really appreciate her saying such nice things about me.  She says well don't other kids and I said of course some do!  I told her I would love to sub for her class again that she can tell her teacher and she can ask for me.  I told their teacher how much she and some others want me back as their sub and then this girl and another one go up to their teacher and say the same thing.  The teacher said she see what she can do or something like that and then said what do you want me to be out?  They said no, then she turns around and walks to me and says actually I do want her out, I want you to teach me!  That there is a bucket filler!  She reminds me of a 3rd grader from last year that was always being kind to me and others.

I also had a blast tutoring a wonderful 1st grader Monday and Thursday.

Positive Fridays - Week of January 7th, 2012

It's great to be back with the kiddos so I can share some more wonderful positives with each and everyone of you.  I know many of you look forward to these posts.  This does mean a double post today, which I rarely ever do, but I didn't want to skip it and still had 1 final freebie post for today so I hope you don't mind!

 

Monday was a teacher work day, Tuesday I found out The Learning Station invited me to work with them part time helping them with promoting, contests, and giveaways!  We had already planned on me reviewing their new CD of there's so stay tuned I will be doing that on this blog and giving away a copy in the super near future!  I did not work on Tuesday or Wednesday unfortunately.

Thursday, I got a call when I was still laying in bed at 8am asking me to come in and sub in ex ed without an assistant as she was sick too.  So I rushed to get ready to help out these 3rd-6th grade boys.  Yes, all boys!

• I was thanked immediately for coming in!  They changed the way they do things now (3rd time I've been at this school) since the Sandy Hook tragedy and gave me a key to keep the room locked all day, which I very gladly did!
• The teacher was very kind in welcoming me to the class and had each child tell me their name (If I recall correctly there were 7 boys).  
• The boys learned about life cycles of a human and butterfly.  They also learned about trading with other countries and food pantries for those unfortunate people who don't have much food if any.
• They were very well behaved, respectful, and cooperative.
• I was thanked by several of the boys for subbing for them.  One even asked me what a sub means.  hehe  So cute!  
• One boy told me that he I so nice, I am even nicer than his teacher, and his teacher is very nice.  He knew how to fill my bucket with kindness!

I do get to work Friday in one of the schools that I frequently sub for and will get to sub in Kindergarten!  I can't wait to be with the little ones who already love me so much!  I will write about that next week!

For those wondering if I got the 1st grade job I interviewed for about a month ago, I have yet to hear back so I don't believe so.  The teacher may have changed her mind and decided to stay for the rest of the year.  I won't give up my search for my dream teaching job.  I know it is out there for me!
