Tutoring Tuesdays - October 16th, 2018

Happy Tuesday! Just a couple of more weeks until Halloween!!!

Last week in tutoring with the 3rd grader we spent the whole time working on dividing 2 digits divided by 1 digit with remainders (dividing by 2, 3, and 4) and then checking the answer using my Long Division with Remainders Pumpkins Task Cards. I had her check it using the white board, but I wrote small enough on the cards in the example to do both. I put it with a game board to make it more fun in tutoring, but these are just traditional task cards that don't come with a game board. There are 24 in all in both color and black and white. There is a recording sheet and answer key. The students will need to write small to fit the answer in the recording sheet or use lined paper!

We also did a couple with 3 digits, but didn't have much time for that. She was starting in class with 4 digits last week with remainders. Yes, in 3rd grade!

Tutoring Tuesdays - November 21st, 2017

Two more days until Thanksgiving here in the United States. I hope each of you has a happy Thanksgiving that celebrates this holiday and enjoys your time off work.

Last week, we reviewed nouns. I gave her a practice sheet and she had some trouble circling many pronouns instead of nouns. So I added some cards to my Nouns Task Cards and let her pick a game board. The additional cards will be added soon and when they do the price will go up. We used my pumpkins game board that can be found with my Pumpkins Sight Word Race.

Then I checked to see if she remembered plural nouns. Again, she had forgot. These skills just aren't practiced enough in school due to time. So I reviewed with her using my Plural Nouns Task Cards. I added some new ones to this set as well. We used the game board from my Fall Monsters Place Value to 1,000 Task Cards. Land on a monster go back to start!

After I rechecked her using a practice sheet and she got them all right!

Tutoring Tuesdays - October 24th, 2017

One more week until Halloween. Wow time flies!!!

Last Wednesday, I started out working with the 2nd grader on practicing subtracting 9's by playing Pumpkin Subtracting 9 Bump. We worked on the trick I taught her to add 1 to the 2nd digit to get the answer. Example 15-9 = 5+1 so it is 6. Another example 17-9 = 7+1=8. Easy quick way to memorize it. Click the picture to grab it for FREE and be sure to leave positive feedback to show your appreciation. Remember it cost me money to make these free for you!

Next we worked on reviewing 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction regrouping with my Subtraction 2 Digit Regrouping Pumpkin Task Cards. It comes with a game board. Children make their way through the pumpkins and the first to the finish line wins. I laminate them so she can write on the cards. There is a recording sheet and answer key so you can use them with or without the game board. Click on the picture if you would like to use this in your classroom.

Favorite Halloween Songs

Halloween will be here soon.  I know many of you have fall themed parties, have storybook parades, and learn about pumpkins, bats, spiders, etc.  You also have to keep the academics moving along.  Children often though need a brain break of some sort.  My favorite kind of brain break in the classroom has always been music.  Check out these great songs from The Learning Station.

Frame from Ashley Hughes, Clip Art from Whimsy Teaching Resources

"Monster Shuffle" is perfect to get your students wiggles out!

"Five Little Pumpkins" is a short animated song that the little ones will be sure to love!

"Stirring Our Brew" is a song that will stir your students imagination. I could see this song leading to a writing assignment where children write about what they would put in their brew.

Other favorites include:
10 Little Monsters a fun counting song to 10 and back to 1.
Pumpkins, Witches, and Ghosts, which is another fun counting song to 10.
Scary Song that has fun young children friendly graphics.  It's a fun song perfect for a party or to play on repeat as children come to your house trick or treating!

Which Halloween song is your favorite?

300 Followers and an October Freebie!

We have made it over 300 followers so I decided for the next few days I'll be posting some amazing freebies on the blog.  Some might be Flash Freebies so be sure to subscribe to my blog if you haven't yet to pick up some great teaching materials!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for following me and checking out my blog so frequently.  I can't believe I am getting close to 170,000 views.  Wow!

The freebie I want to share today is my October Positive Behavior notes.  It is so important to not just send notes home with students are making poor choices, but to do is as well when students are making outstanding choices.  This is one way to do it.  I have included 2 general behavior notes and 2 that are simply meant for fun.  Pick the one or ones that you like best and send them home with your kids when they make good choices.  The parents are bound to love the notes as well!

Thanks for hoppin' by Hopkins' Hoppin' Happenings and don't forget to check back tomorrow for another freebie.  Keep on smiling!
