Halfway through the month. Where has time gone? Let's get to the tutoring fun from last week!
First we worked on skip counting using my Skeleton Skip Counting Task Cards, which comes with this fun board game. Land on a skeleton and you get chased back to start. The cards are for 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, and 10's. 2's, 5's, and 10's have patterns up to 100 where 3's and 4's go no higher than 30. Click the picture to grab it!
Next we worked on telling time to the hour and half hour. We used my Telling Time to the Hour and Half Hour Drawing Hands Task Cards. If laminated children can write on the cards. There is also a recording sheet and an answer key. The recording sheet has the clocks on it so your student can draw the hands on the recording sheet after looking at the task card to see what time to draw in case you want them to turn something in. This game board is NOT included, but you can get it with my Witches Sight Word Race. I used the game board to make the task cards fun in tutoring. Land on a spell book you must go back to start! Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to my blog readers! I didn't tutor last week because the girl I tutor had a doctor appointment. So I will share some more fun things that I have used for tutoring in the past.
When I tutored her last year she was working on skip counting by 2's and 5's. A couple of the activities I worked on with her were skip counting by 2's with caps from water bottles and craft sticks. You simple put a number on each one and mix them up and the student puts them in order. We worked on numbers 2 to 20. Then 22 to 40 and so forth until she mastered counting all the way to 100. It seemed to work better by breaking it up into small parts.
I bought the foam butterfly at Dollar Tree. They come in a pack of a bunch with different colors. It was another easy skip counting activity where she had to lace the yarn which works on fine motor skills as well. She did have excellent fine motor skills and still does. Happy Fridays! I can't believe this is the last Friday in October. I hope each of you who celebrate Halloween have a great Halloween and that you and your students stay safe out there.
Thanksgiving will be our next holiday and it's just right around the corner so I thought I would share a brand new freebie that I created. Thanksgiving Skip Counting by 25 Puzzles is a perfect hands on activity to introduce your students to counting quarters. They can't count quarters if they can't count by 25's so that is why I created these 4 color and b/w puzzles. I hope that using these before counting quarters helps make counting money easier for your students.
I am starting tutoring again this time with a Kindergarten student. I will be helping her mostly with math. One of the skills she has had difficulty with I was told is skip counting, except by 10's. So I made some fun hands-on activities of course to help her learn to skip count (multiples) her 2's and 5's. I believe that breaking them down into smaller chunks is the best way to learn it.
A friend found an idea of making lacing plates to practice skip counting. This will also help with minor motor skills.
I also created some fun farm skip counting puzzles for 2's and 5's. Each one has 10 pieces. If they make the animal correctly, they have the right answer. It is self checking! The student should then say the numbers orally. Click the pictures if you would like the Skip Counting activities to try with your students.
I also strongly believe in chanting them daily during morning meeting or math meeting and using videos or songs with skip counting in them. Videos and songs I can't do tutoring without a computer, but are suggested for those who teach a full class.
One of my favorites is "Skip Count" by The Learning Station. This is a skip counting by 2's song to 30. There are actions for the song that make it even more fun and give children that brain break that they really need! Don has the children marching and jumping as they skip count. FUN!
