Puppy Behavior Freebie!

TGIF my wonderful friends!  This might be the last Friday that I have off for awhile.  I am still on a mission to find a new teaching job.  The children go back to school in Brevard County, except for Kindergarten on Wednesday, and the Kindergarten kiddos start a week from Monday.  I may end up subbing next week!

Last year I was able to make amazing relationships with so many wonderful children.  While I won't get to see them again this year, which is sad, I will likely get to see some of those wonderful children again and meet many more.  The more children I can put a smile on their face so they go home happy the better!  A smile is contagious!  Many 3rd graders asked me last year why I give them treats, pencils, positive notes, bracelets, etc. and I told them just to make you smile.  You smile, I'll smile, and then someone else will smile!  A smile goes a long way!

One of the ways that made the 3rd/4th graders smile was when I handed out a positive behavior note to each child for making such excellent choices.  I did this periodically while subbing all year.  I wish I had the money to buy the ink to do it daily!  The children really loved it and had huge smiles on their faces!  So to start the school year for those of you going back to school in August I have these really cute puppy positive behavior notes.  I can't wait to use them myself!!!  Click the picture to download them and I would appreciate a positive rating and comments! :-)  I'd also love to hear what your kids reaction was when you hand them out! :-)

As always thanks for hoppin' by Hopkins' Hoppin' Happenings!  Keep on smiling!

Classroom Management Tips and July Behavior Freebie

As many of you know by now I spent last school year being a substitute teacher after 8 years in the classroom.  I chose to do this as I wasn't happy where I was at and was unable to get a transfer.  I did do a short term in 5th grade.  Many told me how difficult it is to sub especially because you don't have enough time to build relationships with students.

I set out to prove that theory wrong!  Here are things that I did that brought me wonderful relationships with nearly every class I subbed for some classes became very special to me as I subbed for them multiple times.

1. Come in the door smiling at everyone: children, parents, administration, other teachers, etc.  Others feed off of it!  A smile is contagious, trust me on that one!

2. I tell the students straight up that I have taught for 8 years and I know what I am doing.  Fooling around, misbehaving, and not doing work will not work with me.  It is in your best interest to make good choices and you will have a fun time, learn a lot, and be rewarded!

3. Use whatever reward system the school or teacher has.  I've been in schools and classes that use links (a kind of ticket), tickets (like they give out at the fair to go on rides), cut out stars, skittles, m&ms, etc.  If the teacher does not have a system in place come up with your own for the day!  Reward children constantly for doing the right thing: completing their work, being a good friend, using manners, being a leader, standing up for someone, participating, being helpful, etc.

4. If you have a long term subbing assignment let them cash in their tickets, stars, etc. for rewards.  You come up with the system unless the teacher has left you a plan for it.  The children I subbed for a month and the ones I taught in the short term loved taking their shoes off in the classroom and eating Jolly Ranchers.  The little ones were very happy with stickers.  They almost all seemed to love peppermints, which I used a lot and you can buy a bag for a dollar at Wal-Mart!

5. As children are talking to each other eavesdrop on their conversations to listen to their interests, notice pictures of what they have on their folders, books they are reading, etc.  Talk to them about it.  Tell the child you noticed they love horses.  I noticed you love basketball.  I noticed you always have a book in your hand.  I noticed you wear purple a lot.  Is it your favorite color?  The ones I subbed for responded to the nice things I said to them and always complimented me back in some way or would go out of there way to do so later.

6. If the class was so good at the end of the day or the majority were give those who were good a Positive Behavior Note (see free one below), a piece of candy, a sticker, a special pencil (they love the scented ones), or paper bracelets (Really Good Stuff has these and great pencils).  Children will remember you and will beg for you to come back and be even better behaved!

7. Praise them for doing the right thing as often as possible.

8. If you sub for them often write a nice message on the board first thing in the morning.

9. If you have subbed for them multiple times and you see a child in the hall after school, before school, on the way to the restroom, etc. have mints, jolly ranchers, or something in your pocket and just hand them one.  They ask me what is this for and I say "just to make you smile!"  Trust me it works!

10. Eat with them if you have subbed for them often.  I should have done this more and will next year if I land my own teaching position or sub for the same class often.

Those are some of the things I tried in various grade levels and I was able to get some of the more difficult children to have a pretty good day with me and the others were usually quite excellent.

Here is my hoppin' Positive Behavior note for July.  It would really work for any month, but be sure to check out the other free Positive Behavior Notes in my store!  It's amazing that I have had over 5,000 free products being used in classrooms all over the world.  That makes me smile so much!

June Behavior Freebie!

You the fans voted in my poll that you want freebies!!!  So why not give you your 2nd freebie in just 2 days!!!  I know it is halfway through June and I am far behind on creating a behavior freebie for June.  I finally got it done.  The dang computer problems and me making a couple of awesome place value units took away time.  I will try to do better and get July's up much sooner even though most of you aren't in school in July.  I do know that some have summer school, home school, or work in year round schools so I will make them for July too!

Anyway click on the pictures to go to my store to download the behavior freebie for free.  If you missed previous posts on how I use them, I put the child's name on them ahead of time and usually date them.  Any child who had a good day gets one of these great behavior notes at the end of the day.  The ones who misbehave it goes in the garbage and they have the shot at one next month.  It keeps the kids on their toes as they never know when you will pass them out and with my experience they really want to receive them!  The parents love them as they love getting good notes home.  Great for substitute teachers too, I had so many children thank me and saw their big smiles on their faces when I passed them out from time to time or just wrote handwritten notes.

Positive Friday - Week of February 20th

Well where do I start.  I'll start with my teaching adventure positives!

- I ended last week getting some amazing we'll miss you cards from 3rd and 4th graders.  I can't wait to see them again when I drop off Kindergarten in the cafeteria today!

- Check this out, I am a movie star!!!  Thanks Carolyn!

- I subbed in 6th grade on Wednesday and got some nice compliments about the shirt I wore and even had a student in my class who I had previous taught in Kindergarten.  She was well behaved for me!!!

- I subbed in 1st grade at my former school on Thursday and got to see so many of my wonderful friends.  I also saw 2 6th graders who I had previously taught in Kindergarten and both seem to be doing well!  A boy in the first grade class was so excited because he finally had a "boy" teacher he said.  He said the subs are always girls, finally a boy!!!  At the end of the day he comes to me and thanks me for teaching him for the day and tells me that he'll let his teacher know he wants me back again!  So sweet to touch the life of a child in one day!

- I am beyond excited to be with the amazing Kindergarten class who got me into one particular school because they can't stop saying good things about me.  It should be a super fun day today to teach them and get to say hi to the 3rd/4th graders.  Be looking for next week's blog post on positives from that!

- My blog is exploding in front of my eyes.  I had over 900 views from last Friday at 7pm until Saturday at 7pm.  The views have continued as I'm over 7,000 now.  I began Friday with not even 4,000 views!  You all are AMAZING!!!  Don't forget to enter my contest and get your freebie while your at it!  http://hopkinshoppinblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/200-fb-fan-giveawaycontest.html

- I had some wonderful help this week from my grandma and brother with raking leaves.  They just won't stop falling, we bag them up and they keep coming down.  I know up North they are all down, but not here in Florida!  Got more to do this weekend.

- Some of you like me are huge country music fans.  I am so very excited that a singer of a duo that I grew up listening to is putting out new music.  It's Kix Brooks, formally of Brooks and Dunn!

Don't forget to follow my blog and post your positives in the comments.  I really want to hear about your week.  It would make me super, super, super happy!

March Behavior Notes

First off I just hit 200 facebook fans! whohohoooooo!!!!  Thanks so much to all of you who have stopped by to like that page.  If you aren't a fan on my facebook page head on over now!  Facebook Fan Page!  How about a freebie today and a giveaway/contest starting on Wednesday?

I know, it's not quite March yet, but it's better to be ready ahead of time right?  I created these awesome positive behavior notes for March with shamrocks.  There are two different sayings.  One is a fun one, use them both or use the one you like best.

I use these in the classroom by picking a day of the week, putting all names on them and dating them.  Any child who has a good day gets to take it home to their parents.  It keeps the children on their toes to behave because they really want one!  I even tried them in a 3rd/4th grade classroom for February and the students got super excited!  I believe these will work great all the way through 5th or 6th grade.  It builds great great parent/teacher relationships due to the communication and great student/teacher relationships as the students feel so good to receive them!  Click the picture to go to my TPT store to download them for free.  If you don't have an account you can set it up for free!

You can also click the pictures below to go to my blog posts and get your freebies for January and February.  Those up in the cold north can probably still use the Penguins, which are my most popular download!
