Positive Fridays - Week of August 27th, 2012

Wow, so we made it to the end of the month already!  Happy Friday to you all!

 

Let's start off with last Friday.  Last Friday, I subbed in a 4th grade class.  So many great positives, this was truly a dream class and reminded me of those special 3rd and 4th graders that I taught for a month back in January and February.  I miss those kids so much!  Anyway . . .

• Administration greeted me so kindly as did the awesome office staff and a few kids first thing in the morning who recognized me.  Also, a couple of teachers who I used to work with, so glad to see them again!
• This group of children were so polite!  They used their manners and even raised their hand to throw trash away.  
• They were hard workers!
• Despite the restroom being outside the classroom they were in and out super quickly, which is not always the case especially when subbing!
• One sweet girl asked if she could go talk to a special needs child when we were at recess when the girl walked by because she said the girl likes her and she could get her to smile.  I said absolutely and I watched her and her 2 friends go cheer the girl up!  That my friends is bucket filling at its very best!
• Each child got a positive note in their planner from me and a piece of candy, which put a smile on their face.
• They thanked me for subbing and said goodbye to me before they left.  True bucket fillers and I even read the book to them at the end of the day! 

I didn't work again until Wednesday and I subbed by request for my friend in Kindergarten at a different school still close to my house and one that I love so very much!

• Got to visit with my friend before the school day started.  Awesome catching up with her, I hadn't seen her a year!  You rock Susan!
• Office staff absolutely friendly and the principal walked through the room in the morning and said hi to me and smiled while the children were sitting on the floor doing a super job of listening!
• The little Kindergarten children did quite a good job in line for having 21 (she has 22 total), especially for a sub.  I was pretty impressed that most were quiet and walking instead of running and in a mostly straight line!  Go Kindergarten!
• I had a boy come up to me and hug me at the end of the day and say "you only need to work here and no where else."  I told him I'd be back Friday in another Kindergarten class.
• The children had a blast making the letter M capital and lowercase out of playdough.  Some said they couldn't do it and I managed to get every single child to try and they did a super job!!!  Thanks for the fun activity Susan!

After school Wednesday, I applied for tons of jobs that opened up in the county.  In FL, we have a class size amendment for those of you that don't know from other states.  K-3 can only have 18 students per class, 4-8 is 22 and 9th-12th is 25.  So they are having to get a bunch of new teachers to try to lower the numbers!  Let's hope I'm one of those!

Thursday, I got a call from the secretary at the school I worked at Wednesday to interview Friday after I sub in Kindergarten for a Kindergarten (they need 2 teachers) and 1st-2nd grade combo class!

I also did a good deed on Thursday and took my friend also named Brian to get his daughter who was sick at school.  Poor thing had a super bad headache and was crying all the way home.  I hope she feels better!

Friday's sub day in Kindergarten will be on next week's Positive Friday Post.

Cover The Number

Back To School Freebie!

Happy Friday my amazing friends, fans, teachers, students, and parents!  Thank you so much for helping my blog reach 98,000 views.  That is incredible!  Once I hit 100,000 views I will have another super fun giveaway.  I have a few great fellow bloggers who have each given me an incredible product to giveaway!

This week I finally got my A/C back.  Yes, I've been living with no A/C for 2 weeks here in Florida, not very fun that is for sure.  I am enjoying the air!!!

This coming week should be a fun one as I am heading to the beach to visit with some families of children who I taught my first 2 years in Kindergarten!  It is hard to believe that these children are now going to be in 8th and 9th grade.  They are each doing so well in school and I am so proud of them!  One of their older brothers even went to school to become a teacher and will be teaching in the Fall!

I also have an interview set for Thursday at 3pm.  It is a Charter School and in Orange County.  I am from Brevard, but it would be about a 45 minute drive and I have subbed in some schools in Brevard that were up to an hour away so I can do this!

50 States

How about some learning fun with the 50 states while you are at home or on the road this summer?  I have a couple of great ideas for you!

The first one is this amazing video by The Learning Station.  It is such a catchy song and one of their most viewed videos.  Your child will learn the names of the 50 states in no time with this song while having fun.  Check out the video here:






Also when you are on the road have your child play the 50 states game. When I was a child I enjoyed looking at license plates and trying to find a license plate for every single state! You could even give your child a map of the United States and have him or her color it in as they see a license plate on a car. That way they are learning to locate states on a map as well! What fun!!! I sure enjoyed it growing up! Feel free to post your ideas on learning the 50 states in the comments. I am always looking for new ideas!

Writing Tips

I am sharing my love of the written word as a part of the Superb Writers’ Blogathon. In partnership with Grammarly grammar checker, this series is bringing helpful hints to ambitious writers all across the world wide web.

In Florida and in many states the writing tests standards have gone up.  It's our job as teachers to help our students become superb writers!  In FL for FCAT Writes in 4th grade, they have added requirements that children be able to spell well and use grammar efficiently.  It's important that children in the lower grades learn  how to write well, spell grade level words correctly, and use grade level grammar efficiently.  Then by the time they get to 4th grade or whatever grade the big writing test is in your state, they are better prepared.    Check out my wonderful writing tips to help make your students superb writers!

- Many students have difficulty putting spaces between words.  I have used these wonderful spacemen from Really Good Stuff for years.  As students write each word they put the spaceman down on the paper before writing the next word.  Click the picture if you'd like to check them out yourself!

- Some students have a hard time putting periods where they go.  One idea that I have used that has helped is to pair them up with a partner and use red dots to put in periods.  Making it hands on sometimes helps children learn a difficult concept.  

- For 2nd grade and up a terrific idea is using the wonderful book Hailstones and Halibut Bones to teach Poetry.  This is a great book using colors for poems.  It talks about things that are each color and what they look like, feel like, taste like, smell like, and hear like.  I learned a great activity from a workshop that I used with my children.  First give them a color and ask them to brainstorm what things the color might look like, feel like, etc.  Then read to them the poem for that color and add to the brainstorm chart.  Next put your children into groups or pairs and assign each one a different color.  Have them come up with their own poems!  You can check out the book from Amazon if you'd like.

Positive Fridays - Week of April 30th

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you had a great week. How many days of school do you have left? We have 15 for the children after today and 1 more for us teachers!

- In blog news I am over 49,000 views, you all are simply amazing for viewing my blog over and over again. Don't forget to hop on over on the 6th to get a freebie that is in the $3 to $8 range from me! It will only be free Sunday.

- In 5th grade news, the children continue to use manners when they get a treat or a snack, which is nice to see! There have been times when they have been really really quiet doing their work. I am also pleased that almost every student scored a 100% on the last Vocabulary test last Friday! Spelling test scores also went up considerably with nearly everyone passing! Whohohoooooooo! One of my students also made me a drawing that I proudly hung in the classroom!

- A very sweet Kindergarten child saw me over looking her balcony earlier this week and yelled my name and waved as I walked into the school. She put a huge smile on my face. What a bucket filler she is! - Some of the 3rd/4th graders were sweet enough to sign my yearbook that I just had to buy since I know so many of the children in that school. One even wrote that he will miss me and another wrote to have a Happy Summer! I'll be letting the 5th graders that want to sign it and sign each others the last few days of school for something fun to do.

- I continue to get hugs, smiles, and hellos from the Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade children. Even some other 5th grade children, 1st graders, 2nd graders, and a couple of 6th grades have been saying good morning or hi to me lately. One gave me a candy bar, which was super sweet! It is a great feeling to feel loved by most of the children. These kids are bucket fillers.

- I also filled the bucket of a sweet 3rd grader who really loves horses.  I told her about the new Flicka movie that is on DVD and she just got so excited and full of smiles.  She said she is going to have to watch that!  I know I made her day!

 - Administration continues to be such a big help. They always have something so nice to say to me and have told me that I am doing a great job and they know how hard it is to take over for a class at the end of the year. These two are bucket fillers and I hope to get to work for them next year!

- The teachers in this school continue to amaze me. The wonderful 3rd/4th grade teacher gave me a great idea for lessons, which I have been using daily this week and it's working really well! I have a wonderful teacher who has been assisting me with helping children in the class who need extra help. A few other teachers are coming in to help offer suggestions and help out with children too. I have never seen such teamwork before. These teachers are bucket fillers and the children are benefiting because of it! If any of you are reading this, thank you so much!

- In non-school related news I am headed to a 3 day country music concert called Runaway Country this weekend! It's going to be a whole lot of fun! I get to meet Steve Holy and for the 3rd time Chris Young! I can't wait!
