Tutoring Tuesdays - February 6th, 2018

Happy Tuesday! Wow, it's already February! I hope those of you who watched the Super Bowl enjoyed the game. I watched the Puppy Bowl instead.

Last week I worked with the 2nd grader more on counting dollars using my Counting Dollar Bills Task Cards. We worked on counting 1 dollar bills, 5 dollar bills, and 10 dollar bills. It also includes 20 dollar bills but we did not get that far. She only missed a couple. I put it with a new Unicorn game board. The game board is sold with my Unicorn Games. If you land on a unicorn you go again but if you land on the rainbow poop you go back to start!

We also worked on counting coins using my Counting Coins Clip It Task Cards. There are 24 cards where she had to find the the correct amount with the decimal point! She did an excellent job and didn't miss a single question! This set also includes 24 cards without the decimal point and just has the cent sign with different choices for answers.

We finished using my Valentine's Day 3 Digit Subtraction Task Cards. We only had time to do a few cards. I put them with the Valentine's Day Monster Board Game, which is not included with these task cards. You can get the game board for FREE. Land on a monster go back to start, but land on a bunny you get to go again!

Tutoring Tuesdays - December 26th, 2017

I hope those that celebrate Christmas had a wonderful Christmas!

I won't be tutoring the next two weeks while the wonderful 2nd grader enjoys her vacation, but be sure to hop back to my blog this Thursday and January 1st for some awesome deals!

One thing she has had some difficulty with in school is counting by 1's from a given number to 1,000 and counting backwards from that number so I created these Numbers to 1,000 Bug in my Marshmallow Before/After Numbers to 1,000 Task Cards. I didn't think it was possible to write on them even if laminated as I had to make the spaces small to create this center. Well the 2nd grader showed me it is possible if you write really small. Otherwise, they can tell their partner the answer, write it on a white board (which we started doing) or write it on the included recording sheet. Since Christmas was near I used my Reindeer game board with it, but it comes with the game board pictured with bugs in the marshmallows. Land on a bug go back to start! So much fun! I will be working more with her on this skill especially where she has to write what comes next after 199, 299, 399, etc. and counting backwards from 200, 300, or a ten like in 230, 280, etc. Those were the tricky ones for her. She will get it though with more practice!

After playing this one I worked on groups of a fourth with her using these Snowmen Fractions of a Group Task Cards. She circles how many are in the group and then tells me the answer. If your students have trouble I suggest using manipulatives and 4 cups and have them divide them into 4 cups. Target has cute snowmen your students would love in their dollar section.

We finished with answering questions on a graph that I found on TPT. Another skill she's been working on.

Tutoring Tuesdays - August 15th, 2017

Tutoring Tuesdays is back! The little one was on vacation for a couple of weeks and I was busy setting up a brand new store so I did not write any post on Tuesdays.

We first reviewed 2 digit by 2 digit subtraction regrouping using my 2 Digit Subtraction Regrouping Apple Task Cards. I have her write on the cards as I laminated them. Otherwise you can give them scrap paper. I use the game board that came with it but you are welcome to use it for Scoot or any other cooperative group activity. If a student lands on an apple with a worm they get chased back to start. She decided to put the worms in jail so it was a safe spot. She drew jail bars over the worm. She has an awesome imagination that many kids don't have anymore. I let her as to me it's all about the child learning the skill and she did terrific!

Next we worked more on the 9's addition trick that I mentioned before using this game board that I will be adding to the Primary Reading and Math Bundle. They simple roll one die (dice) and move that many spaces on the game board.

Reading and Math Games Growing Bundle Primary Grades

Last we worked a little bit on 3 digit addition regrouping with my 3 Digit Addition 4 In A Row game. There are 4 different game boards. Children can either share a game board like I did with her and spin two spinners and adding them together. Then they find it on the board and put a counter on it. Get 4 in a row they win! This way they can wind up blocking each other. Or you can give each student a game board and they just try to get 4 in a row with no chance of anyone blocking them.

Addition Wheels

I didn't tutor last Thursday so I thought I would share my Addition Fact Wheels that I created recently.

Addition Fact Wheels

These are similar to multiplication wheels that are also in my shop. Laminate or put in plastic sleeves so children can write on them or print out the black and white copy for students to write on with pencil. They add the number in the middle of the wheel to each of the other numbers. You can also write all the sums on clothespins and have children clip them on the wheel! That helps those that need fine motor control. These are in color and black and white. There are wheels for 0 to 10 and they add numbers 0 to 11. I included 11 only because there are 12 spaces on the wheel.

These make great centers, stations, or rotations, small group work, partner work, or for early finishers!

Wow, half the year has already gone. Where in the world did time go? I wish each of you a great 4th of July weekend if you celebrate here in the United States!

Insects I Have Who Has CVC Short A Real Words and Nonsense Words is a fun game that makes your students listen carefully to their fellow students as well as focusing on sounding out words. You will know if they truly understand how to read CVC words and not just memorize because on some of them they have to decode the nonsense or silly made up words! If you enjoy the game please leave a perfect rating and kind feedback. If you find an error please email me and give me the opportunity to fix it before giving a rating. Thank you!

Tutoring Tuesdays - June 6th, 2017

I had another great day of tutoring the incoming 2nd grader last Thursday. She is always such a bundle of fun!

We started out working on 2 digit subtraction without regrouping. We used my 2 Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping Zoo Task Cards with the zoo game board that is included with the task cards. When students land on snake they go back to start, but if they land on a palm tree they get to go again. I let her write on the cards with a dry erase marker.

We finished up the tutoring session with my new 3 Digit Addition Regrouping Fidget Spinner Task Cards. She got to use her new Fidget Spinner that she got last week. If a player lands on the fidget spinner they get to spin it. She absolutely loved that idea! If you don't have a fidget spinner handy you can just let them go again. I let her do both to add to the fun. The cards work well if laminated students can write on them.

Tutoring Tuesdays - April 18th, 2017

Last week I actually didn't tutor, but went to a birthday party for the girl I tutor. The kids had so much fun bouncing in a bounce house and her dad hooked up a bubble machine that was very cool! I found out she loves Robots so I have been working hard making some robot teaching products.

Today, I will share some things I used for tutoring in the past.

To practice telling time to the 5 minutes I used this clock. The minutes are self checking as you can lift up the tabs to see how many minutes. I made clocks like these for 2nd graders many years ago.

Telling Time to the Five Minutes DIY

After doing some telling time with the clock I made we played a game Apple Race Time to the 5 Minutes using these task cards. A game board is also included that I didn't take a picture of.

Apple Race Time to the 5 Minutes

These 3 Digit Addition Task Cards I used with one of my sight word game boards Fish Sight Word Race to help making adding 3 numbers more fun. We did not use the sight words just the game board from it. Task cards are so perfect with game boards. I laminate the task cards so they can be written on with dry erase markers making them even more fun! They work well in the classroom, in tutoring, or home school.

Tutoring Tuesdays - April 11th, 2017

Welcome to tutoring Tuesdays! I really tutor on Thursday afternoons, but this gives me more time to show some things I worked on the previous week and possibly other sessions when I don't tutor. Pictures were taken before or after tutoring. Currently I tutor a 1st grader so these will be primary activities. These activities will work well in the classroom and for home school students too.

One of my favorites to use during tutoring is the game Bump! Bump is a fun engaging game where children roll a die (dice) or a spinner and cover the number on the game board (or word if a reading game). Then the next player goes. If the same child gets the same number (or word) twice they place a 2nd cube or counter (same color) on it and then that space is locked. If anyone gets it again they simply lose their turn. However, if there is only one on the space and the other player gets the same number or word they bump them off and take the space! This game can take 10 minutes or a half an hour. Here is a free one that we played yesterday perfect for Easter. Easter Baskets Subtracting from 13 Bump.

FREEBIE Easter Subtracting from 13 Bump

I also worked on Easter Addition 2 Digit Regrouping Task Cards using bunny task cards. I placed a game board that comes with the 30 task cards to make it more fun. Children solve an equations and  roll one die and move that spaces on the game board. If they land on a snake they go back to start, but if they land on a chick they get to roll or spin again. This game also comes with bunny spinners. I forgot to take a picture of that.

Easter Addition 2 Digit Regrouping Task Cards

I have a lot of task cards and race games in my store for addition, subtraction, multiplication, sight words, fluency phrases, etc. They are a favorite of kids!

I finally we worked on some Addition and Subtraction Word Problems to 10. I gave her one task card at a time and she solved it on a dry erase board showing how to solve it.

How to Teach Your Child to Read Quickly and Correctly

How to Teach Your Child to Read Quickly and Correctly

Are you concerned about the future of your child? If yes, then this paper is just for you! You may
be unaware, but the ability to quickly and correctly read greatly affects the performance and the
comfort of your child. So how do you make your kid a speed reader?
Regardless of the age, there are the next groups of children according to their reading speed:
just learning how to read;
  • 30 words per minute;
  • 80 words per minute;
  • 120+ words per minute.
As for the average comfortable reading speed, it should be about 180 words per minute, because
this speed correlates with a good level of perception and understanding of the text.

Factors to Pay Attention to:

#1 Anticipation

When an adult reads, he anticipates the following words, phrases, and meaning and sees a
structure, which helps him to grasp the general meaning of the text. Children do not possess
reading to that extent; they rather recognize syllables and the next word. They have all the power
directed to it, so they often do not understand what they read and are unable to see the meaning
of the whole phrase, let alone the possible subtext.

#2 Memory, Attention, and Perception

Be sure to spend at least 50% of the time on the building of an intellectual base, as it’s the core
of fast and thorough perception. The point is not to teach a child to read fast, but to accelerate his
thinking process and cognitive skills that are in charge of reading, writing, and many other
development processes.

#3 Interest in Reading

Lack of interest is always the result of improper training, which can kill the desire to learn
something new. To avoid such an internal protest, ask the child what he/she wants you to read,
and stop reading once the child is bored.

#4 Fine Motor Skills and Physical Training

Every parent should know how to develop fine motor skills. It prepares the hand of your little
one to write and contributes to his handwriting. There a lot of exercises, for example, origami,
applique, sewing, clay modeling, puzzles, and so on. The main thing is to find what your child
adores and provide him with the best conditions and opportunities.

It may surprise you, but sports sections, dancing, walking, outdoor games, exercises, etc. are also
very important for the development of reading skills.

How to Teach Your Child to Read Quickly and Correctly

What You Mustn’t Do

Think the more the child reads, the better? That's not true. By suppressing the will of the child,
you risk exacerbating his/her reluctance to study.

If your kid doesn't like reading or have problems with it, let him/her read:
  • Short words of 3 to 5 letters until he/she is tired.
  • Short texts up to 30 words, gradually increasing the volume.
  • 1-2 pages in the case he/she reads at a pace of 60-80 words per minute.
  • 2-8 pages if he/she reads at a pace of more than 120 words per minute.
How to Train a Child to Read?

#1 Extracts

The bottom line: add 30 words to the actual reading speed.
If the child is reading at a pace of 30 words/minute, let him/her read the extract at a pace of 60
three times in a row. The first time the child will likely to be uncertain and slow and won’t cover
the whole text, but after a few repetitions, he/she will become faster and faster.
The training ends when the reading speed reaches 180 words per minute.

#2 "Wave" Reading

The bottom line: turn the book by 90 and 180 degrees
This exercise is suitable for children who can read at least 50-60 words per minute or faster.
First, give the child to read the text in the normal position, then turn the book by 90 degrees and
let the kid read it upside down and finally, turn the book by 180 degrees. Start with a few
sentences and bring it to the whole page.

#3 Retelling

The bottom line: read and retell from 1 to 8 pages of the text
This exercise must be done every day. If the baby reads really bad, then read the text and let the
child retell. First, let him/her retell a single paragraph, and then increase the volume up to a page
or even the whole text. Of course, you don’t need to ask the child to point to all the details let
him/her tell you the events, the participant, and the outcome.

#4 Writing a Mini-Essay on a Given Topic

The bottom line: a 12-sentence essay on a given problem
This exercise is effective for 10-12 years-old children. Check the logics of the narrative and the
connection between the problem and the arguments. Thinking time should be about 5–10
minutes. If you aren’t sure about the effectiveness of this method, you can always ask
professionals for homework help.
Keep in mind that you mustn’t force a child to train if he is tired or sick!

Favorite Christmas Videos

Christmas or winter break will be here before you know it.  Children are getting anxious and need a brain break. I have shared all of these wonderful Christmas videos from The Learning Station on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, etc., but you may have missed them so I thought I would share several of my favorites!

Clip Art Credit: Whimsy Workshop Teaching

First up is my favorite song as a child called Up On The Housetop. The Learning Station actually has 3 different versions of the song. My favorite is the brain break version featuring Don and an adorable little one.

Another favorite of mine is 12 Days Of Christmas. The Learning Station has two versions of this classic an animation and a live version.  I actually performed this with Don on stage a couple of years ago, but I'm not in this video.

Me and Santa's Elves is a clever song with animation that your children or students will enjoy singing!

 Other favorites include:
"Dancing Around The Christmas Tree" is a wonderful brain break song.  It is beautifully animated.
"Has Anybody Seen Santa?" has lead vocals from The Learning Station's daughter Kali. This popular song is performed in many school assemblies.  The adorably animated song is loved by children and adults.
"Jingle Bells" a classic song that is a favorite among children and adults all over the world.  This one is an animated video.
They have so many other great Christmas songs.  You can check them all out individually on the playlist I created HERE or play all the videos in a row with an ad free version (other than right at the beginning) that would be perfect for your parties by clicking HERE.

Which of these Christmas songs is your favorite?  Let me know in the comments.
