Freebie Fridays - Week of July 8th, 2016

Happy Friday! I hope everyone in the United States had a great 4th of July weekend!

Today's featured freebie is a brand new one I created this week. I'm not a big fan of worksheets, but I have been working on printables for the various phonics sounds: Beginning Sounds, CVC and CVCe including Y, Blends, Digraphs, Diphthongs, Vowel Pairs, R-Controlled Vowels, and Silent Letters.

I have made my Silent Letters packet available for free. One color the picture that makes the sound for each silent letter: gn, kn, wr, and mb. Click on the picture to get this no prep packet for free.

Throw Out The Worksheets and Engage Students!

That's right, throw out those worksheets and engage your students as the end of the year comes to a close.  I am seeing all kinds of quotes being passed around on social media that make me quite sad that talk about recycling worksheets.

I get and understand that you are very busy with all of the end of the year requirements, but I don't believe in giving busy work.  It IS busy work if you give children worksheets (includes homework) and you never look at it and just toss it.  Yes, I have given worksheets and most of homework is worksheets, but ALL of them are checked and returned to students or put in a portfolio.  Busy work is NOT okay, NEVER!

So what can you do if you don't have the time to check and hand back worksheets?  At this time of the year most skills have been taught so let your students play learning games.  There are many learning games out there that require NO prep other than a dice or spinner.  I have created No Prep Board Games for all of Fry's sight words 1 to 400!  Each 100 word set includes 4 different board games with words and 2 blank games that can be used with any set of cards even math!

What do you do to avoid giving busy work during this time of year or any time of the year?

Animal Science Unit

I have bit the dust and finally decided to make something that isn't reading, math, or classroom management related.  I made an Animal Science Unit.  You can purchase it on TPT for 50% off through July 4th HERE. This unit has fun posters, task cards, games, worksheets, assessments, and a project.  It is very heavy on vocabulary and applying the vocabulary.  Many of the things also come in B/W.  See the actual description or table of contents for exactly what pieces are b/w and which are in color only.  The amazing clip art is from Teachers Clip Art!

There are 20 vocabulary words: mammal, birds, amphibian, reptile, fish, insects, vertebrate, invertebrate, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, consumer, producer, food chain, organism, environment, adaptation, predator, prey, and habitat.

Here's a couple of pictures of games in the packet.

Here's a couple of pictures of one of the worksheets and part of the assessment!

You can see an example of the project by checking out a previous blog post by clicking HERE

Any questions on this unit let me know!  I am very excited about it.  You can get it at my TPT store by click HERE or any of the pictures above.  I will update it with links to my other stores soon.

Spelling Fun!

I was asked by Jake at Educational Resources and Beyond to write a review for one of his spelling packets. Opinions are of my own and I received the packet and no money to write the review.

The packet I am reviewing is Spelling Early Years Package 3.  This packet includes phonics sounds that work well for 1st-4th grade: ir and ur; ng and er; nk and ar; and oi and oy.  The highly engaging looking worksheets have the students filling in the missing spelling pattern, tracing the words, writing and drawing words in pictures with the sounds like shirt for ir, and correcting the spelling words along with capitalization and punctuation in sentences.

The packet also includes a page where the students can make their own word searching using their spelling words.  He made is there are two on each page so you could cut it in half and save paper, which I love as many of us have copy restrictions.  Look, Copy, Cover, Check is excellent for students to practice learning their spelling words.

Finally it includes some full page posters that are task cards: writing words in rainbow colors, making it out of play dough, finding words in words, etc.

I love the worksheets and task cards.  They are highly engaging for students.  If you like this there are 5 Spelling packages available individually or as a set.  Click on the picture if you would like to check it out in his store.

Let us know in the comments what you do to make spelling fun for your students?

Santa's Fraction Cookies

I just made my favorite freebie to date!  This game is called Santa's Cookies Fractions.  In this game children pick two cards and compare the fraction cookies that Santa Claus is holding.  The student decides which number is greater or if they are equal.  If everyone agrees it is correct the student rolls the dice and multiplies the two numbers together and writes down their points on the scorecard.  After 5 rounds they add up their points and the one with the most wins.

It fits Common Core Standards in 3rd grade and 4th grade.  It would be a great review in 5th.  3rd grade teachers may want to take out the cards that have 5ths.  It also includes two different worksheets on comparing, one with pictures and one without so you can differentiate.

Click the picture to download for free and pretty please take 1 minute of your time and leave me a nice rating and comment.  You would make my day!

I hope the amazing 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders enjoy this game!!!

Be sure to hop on over to Classroom Freebies for more fun!

Second Grade Common Core

2nd Grade teachers I came across a really awesome Second Grade Common Core Workbook the other day that I wanted to share with all of you!  It has over 575 worksheets, activity centers, and posters that correlate with the 2nd grade Common Core Standards.  The posters are very colorful and the worksheets and centers are engaging!  This workbook covers all of the Language Arts and Math Common Core Standards!  I believe this will make planning much easier for you second grade teachers.

Click the picture or the hyperlink at the top of the post for more information.  You can even see samples inside the book!

Kindergarten Math Centers

I hope that you caught my freebies the past two days.  On Sunday, I shared my October Behavior Notes and Monday I shared a Bucket Filling/Bucket Dipping Freebie.

Today is a FLASH FREEBIE of my newest product Kindergarten Halloween Math Centers and Worksheets.  These focus on patterns, sorting, and ordering numbers.  If you decide to download it all that I ask is that you leave kind feedback and a rating.  I would also love it if you would follow my blog and store.  The freebie will be up from 7pm Eastern until 9pm Eastern.  After that it will be set back to the original price of just $2!  Click the picture to get the freebie!

These fit the following Common Core Standards:

K.CC.3 Counting & Cardinality Know number names and the count sequence.

K.MD.3

Measurement & Data Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category.

3. Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. (My product only focuses on sorting not counting)

I am surprised that patterns are not in the Common Core for Kindergarten anyway else notice this?  I didn't see it listed under first grade or second grade either.  I wonder why this is?  Anyway, I know many of you teach it so I do have a center with worksheet on patterns in this packet.

Be sure to chek back tomorrow for another freebie or flash freebie.  Thanks for hoppin' by Hopkins' Hoppin' Happenings.  Keep on smiling!
